After my first disappointing purchase, I recklessly hunted for another set. This time, I found it from somewhere up in Canadia.
Despite the blatant advertising on the aluminum case, this is a VERY nice set overall. Now, I had to contact the site directly to ship it to the USA which cost a hefty amount to ship (6.7 kg cost be almost half my purchase price), but the set itself was a steal. Upon contacting the retailers, they offered me a 1.5 mahjong set which is not listed on their site. What this means is that for each suit, there are 3 opaque tiles and 3 transparent tiles. This way, you can play 25%~75% transparent mahjong. All that for a little over $80 CAN!
So despite my better money managing judgment, I went for it. Here are a couple of size comparisons with my original tiles:
The tiles themselves are VERY good quality tiles. They feel a little rubbery due to the plastic wrapping and acrylic material, but that should be fine after some plays. They’re solid, they’re probably a little lighter than my older tiles (I don’t have weights), but they’re really nice.
If you’re in the market for some nice transparent tile action to replay some Akagi mahjong or tweak your playing experience, I would recommend getting it from these guys (check link above). It’s well worth it.
And as a bonus, spot the yakuman:
