Sketches and Mahjong Log #4

Hmm…I’ve been trying to get back in the drawing mood lately, but with edits and classes (both of which I need to work on more), finding time is a bit of a puzzle. I’ve been playing a bit with sketches for a request, but neither of them made it as a final product. In any case, I can at least show them. The finished drawing itself will have to wait (it’s done, but now’s not yet the time to show it).

In other news, the group finally got together again after two weeks of campus distractions for mahjong. Click the link below to read the log. (Oh yeah, we got pictures again. Hooray!)

Players: Josh, Kyle, Caleb, Ruka

Game Type: Half Han Chan, East round only

Casual Rules: Open Tan Yao is possible, temporary furiten is not observed, dead hands are not observed

Starting Score: 26000

Round 1
Josh starts off as dealer.

Caleb rons off Josh’s 8-sou. However, the 8-sou was already in his discard, so chombo was paid for calling a ron during furiten.

Dealer is in tenpai, East 1 continues.

Caleb -8000, Josh +4000, Kyle +2000, Ruka +2000

As you can see here, these are different tiles from what I’ve shown you guys before. They are roughly half the size and weight of the set we usually use which make them easier to knock down both from the wall and the hands. They look nice but they’re also harder to read because of the red on black scheme that the tile design has. Why did we use this in the first place? I suggested doing a Red Tile game which replaces one #5 tile from each numbered suit which then in turn acts like a dora. However because of the reasons stated above, we decided to scratch the Red Tile game and use the heavier tiles for a normal game.

Round 1-2
Ruka rons off Caleb’s 6-man. However, he pays chombo for declaring a false win.

Dealer is not in tenpai, game goes on to East 2, Kyle becomes the new dealer.

Ruka -8000, Josh +4000, Kyle +2000, Caleb +2000

I never thought I would see the day that I’d pay chombo for a mistake like that. I thought I had two chis with those mans which I somehow read as 445566, but what I actually had was 335566 which was more set up for a 7-pair hand. Sometime earlier in the round, I was going for that but ponned the 8-man since I didn’t think I could get another 6-man for a 7-pair attempt. Meh.

Round 2
Caleb rons off Ruka’s 5-pin. Open Tanyao; 1 han, 30 fu, 1000.

Ruka -1000, Caleb +1000

Caleb becomes the new dealer.

When Kyle ponned the hatsu (green) and haku, the others may have been sweating since a similar incident in the first round occurred when Josh ponned 2 dragons making it look like he had a Dai San Gen (Greater 3 Dragons) going. Didn’t fool me though since I collected two of the chuns early on and wasn’t about to give those up for anything.

Round 3
Caleb rons off Kyle’s 5-man. Open Tanyao, dora 2; 3 han, 30 fu, dealer win, 5800.

East 3 continues.

Caleb +5800, Kyle -5800

It’s handy to take pictures during a game. Why? My records say Caleb only won 1000 for that hand. What I forgot was that he a dealer, and he had 2 doras in his hand. Well, nothing much to say here really other than that.

Round 3-2
Caleb calls riichi.

Caleb tsumos. Tanyao, Iipeikou (2 identical chi of same suit); 4 han, 30 fu, dealer win, +300 for dealer tsumi, 12000.

East 3 continues.

Caleb +12000, Ruka -4000, Josh -4000, Kyle -4000

Ack! Caleb’s really putting the beat down on us this time! Kinda forgot about the reverse dora here, but let’s just say he didn’t get any extra doras from that, k? Also, I don’t know why, but the rounds seem to extend whenever he’s dealer. It’s a real mystery……

Round 3-3
Kyle riichis.

Round ends with Kyle and Josh in tenpai.

Ruka is the new dealer.

Kyle +500 (-1000 from riichi), Josh 1500, Ruka -1500, Caleb -1500

Our hands were a mess for most of the round and the discards probably tell that story clearly. Caleb on the other hand still went for the 13 Orphans even when he knew he couldn’t get it…even for a tenpai. Oh well, it’s just another night of mahjong.

Round 4
Ruka calls riichi.

Ruka rons off Caleb’s 4-man. Chii Toitsu (7-pair), dora 2; mangan, dealer win, 12000.

East 4 continues.

Ruka +13000 (+1000 from last round’s riichi ante), Caleb -12000

Finally! A mangan! It’s a bit hard not to call sometimes when playing with these guys. Well, we were also probably a bit tired by this point. Josh looks a bit dangerous with that hand he’s got going though it was a bust at this point in the round.

Round 4-2
Josh call riichi.

Josh tsumos. Tan-pin, Ippatsu (win in the round of riichi); mangan, 8000.

Game ends.

Josh +8000, Ruka -4000, Kyle -2000, Caleb -2000

A magnificent end to the game! Josh didn’t get an ura-dora (reverse dora), but handily defeated the rest of us. I wonder how a game would turn out if nobody chombos. That hasn’t happened yet…sadly.

Final Scores
Josh - 38500, +25

Caleb - 23300, -7

Ruka - 22500, -8

Kyle - 19700 , -10

Running time: 3.5 hrs

A discussion of getting some girls together for strip mahjong came up some time during the game. In your dreams, Caleb. In your dreams.

Exerpts from IM conversation with Ruka:

    East 3-1:

Psi: Hmm… well I guess you had a good Toi Toi going so you could afford to declare those Kans
    Ruka: Yeah
Psi: San An Ko was a possibility there
Ruka: I guess the other South was in the wall still since no one had the 4th one. San An Ko is what again?
    Psi: 3 concealed 3-of-kinds
Ruka: I was trying for it, but it’s hard not to call sometimes
Psi: Kan is shiny~~~~ I know the feeling

    East 3-3:

Psi: ……. Caleb was going for Kokushi Musou (13 Orphans)…??? His discard pile looks like it would have been an ideal hand to aim for Chanta, Hon Itsu or possibly even Hon Rou Tou. Well… maybe not Hon Rou Tou but…
Ruka: It’s his favorite yakuman just because of how impossible it is to get. But yeah, our strategies aren’t exactly even roughly polished
Psi: ah~ a favourite Yakuman hand he keeps on going for… I see I see. I’d understand if it was an act of desperation but… he was winning and he was dealer… and he still went for that thing……. really must like it indeed
Ruka: You also gotta remember, we’re just playing for fun. If we were serious, hands wouldn’t even be shown in the pictures
    Psi: true

    East 4-1:

Psi: ummu, Josh could have gotten a Tsu I Sou I see (win with only Word tiles - dragons and winds). Though… why’d he throw away the Pei (North)…?
    Ruka: Good question

Oh, and this is a fluke (dealer) win: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/Psieye/EpicDora9.jpg

Rin Shan Kai Hou (winning off the dead wall tile after declaring a Kan)
    Hon Itsu (one suit)
    Toi Toi (only 3-of-kinds)
Yaku Hai x2 (Round wind & Hatsu)
    Dora 9

  3. 3 Caleb Feb 24th, 2008 at 12:28 pm

Chanta? Hon Itsu? Hon Rou Tou? Caleb has no idea. Must learn more yakuman.

Strip mahjong… well, a man can dream, at least. At the rate games I’ve been in have been going, though, it’d take an hour for a girl to take off her socks. :(

Ah, sorry I forgot you guys weren’t using the Japanese names. Er let me check with Anon’s guide…

Chanta = Terminal in every meld (Mixed Outside hand?)
Hon Itsu = hand made of only 1 suit and word tiles
Hon Rou Tou = Toi Toi Ho Chanta, i.e. you only have 1’s, 9’s and Word tiles

Ah well, since you seem to like going for those stupidly impossible Yakuman hands, here’s some (er, again using Japanese names):

Su An Ko - form 4 concealed 3-of-kinds, then wait on a single tile
Chuuren Poto - with a single suit, form: 1112345678999 and have any 1 extra tile of the same suit
Chin Rou Tou - you only have 1’s and 9’s in your hand
Tsu I Sou - you only have Word tiles in your hand
Dai Su Shi - you have melds of all the Wind tiles (EEE SSS WWW NNN). Alternatively, having one of the winds as your pair is also a Yakuman (called “Shou Su Shi”)

So, when someone has declared Pon on 2 of the 3 dragons, you should watch out for Tsu I Sou as well as Dai/Shou San Gen. Even without those, calling 2 Pons on Word tiles means it’s easy to form Chanta & Hon Itsu or Toi Toi & Hon Itsu, as well as spamming away at Dora tiles (well… this is only applicable if Red tiles are in play).
