Mahjong Log #1

Lately, the Gaku-Touhou scanlation staff (as well as acquaintances) have been getting into mahjong using the Japanese rule set using Tenhou, an online mahjong program. Among the usual players are Pilpsie, Trefle, Arsen, Wong, Jiu, Komachi, TranceHime, Smashy, and myself. Here’s a picture from one of the games:

After a while though, I decided to get a set of my own to teach some friends after they watched Akagi. After a few rounds, we finally got the flow down and even got to the point where points were used.

Tonight was the 3rd mahjong session for us. Our 4th person was out of town, so we invited another of our friends to join in. A makeshift mahjong table was made (we were using a poker table before which was too wide) on which we played on this session. Our sessions are usually half a han chan (4 rounds instead of 8) and that still takes about 2 hours to finish with setup each round, no time limits on turns, and score tallying. Starting points have been 26000 up to this point though it probably should be higher so that someone is likely to be at or over 30000 after the session. For yaku sheets and scoring, this pdf file and this site were used to help us decide if hands were worth anything at all.

In tonight’s mahjong session, I didn’t have a camera with me this time, but I’ll try to remember that next session so that there will be pictures to accompany the descriptions.

Players: Josh (East in first round), Kyle (South in first round), Ruka (West in first round, Caleb (North in first round)

Wind Round: South

Round 1
Starting score was 26000 each.

Josh declared Riichi during the round.

Caleb declares ron with an open Pinfu. Chombo was paid for not having any yaku.

Josh +3000 (-1000 for leftover riichi), Kyle +2000, Ruka +2000, Caleb -8000

Round 2
Caleb rons off Ruka with a concealed Tanyao/Pinfu but did not riichi.

Caleb +3000 (+1000 from last round’s riichi ante), Ruka -2000

Caleb becomes the new dealer.

Round 3
Caleb declares Riichi.

Caleb rons off Ruka with a Seven Pair waiting on a 7-man.

When hands were revealed after the win, Ruka was in Tenpai with 13 Orphans and needed to discard a 7-man to put in a 9-pin in his hand. If the 7-man passed, Josh may have played into Ruka’s hand with a Chun (he also had a South and West wind, but those were in Ruka’s discard and therefore no win could be declared due to furiten). Darn you and your Seven Pair! ;_;

Caleb +4800, Ruka -4800

Round 4
Ruka declares Riichi waiting on a 6-pin or a 9-pin on a Tanyao hand.

Caleb deals into Ruka’s hand.

Since the Reverse Dora was accidentally left out in the last round, a Reverse Dora was not included in this round.

Caleb -2000, Ruka +2000

Final Score
Technically, someone needed have at least 30000 points to end the game, but the game was cut short since people had to be elsewhere. The scores are in order of place.

Josh – 29000, +15

Kyle – 28000, -2

Caleb – 23800, -6

Ruka – 23200, -7

As I said before, I’ll try to have pictures and hopefully improve on how I report the game’s flow and turnout.
